Lockdown Lessons

Soooooooo….its been a while since my last post! I know…Forgive me as I’m back!

I hope you have been keeping well during lockdown and using your time as productively as possible?! Maybe you’ve just been using your time to rest, which is perfectly ok. I’ve been doing the same. However, when I’ve not been resting, I have tried to spend my time learning something new or focusing on an interest which I’m calling my, ‘Lockdown Lessons‘.

So what have I been learning during lockdown?? Well, I’ve listed a few things below about what I have been up to which hopefully may give you some ideas to get involved with in your own time, if interested.

  • I’m learning a new language!

Well technically, Spanish is not completely new to me. I enrolled on a beginners class a few years back. Although I didnt go on to the intermediate level class because I found the Spanish Teacher way too intense, I could thankfully still remember a few basic phrases here and there which made me kinda feel like a Pro by the time I downloaded the Duolingo App on my phone.

In case you are not aware, Duolingo is a free App which you should be able to download on any device. I like the App because its free and im kinda addicted to collecting the lingots for every lesson I complete (If you know, you know!).

I previously paid for and downloaded Babbel which was Ok but to be honest I didn’t push myself as much as I should have to consistently use the App, so it kind of felt like a waste of money in that sense. Whereas with Duolingo it is completely free and there’s an incentive to be consistent so that you can keep building up your ‘streak’ (again, if you know, you know!).

Another good thing about Duolingo is that you can log into the App whenever you feel like, learn as much as you like and for as long as you want. Its really down to you with how much you can be asked to learn.

  • I’ve signed up for online writing workshops!

I’ve attended free online writing workshops run by Spread the Word which surprisingly have been enjoyable. I say surprisingly, because I didn’t expect to enjoy/appreciate the workshops as much as I have only because I thought that I would still struggle with writers block (which I must confess has been one of the reasons I had been quiet on here for a while), but it has been completely the opposite experience so far for me.

If you’re interested in taking part in any creative writing workshops you can check out Spread the Word or research online any other course providers that may take your interest. I’m sure there’s plenty that you can choose from especially during this time.

  • I’ve been saving!

I’ve mentioned this already in a previous post (check it out), but I’ll mention it again. During lockdown I set savings goals for myself, which lets be honest, has been easier to achieve due to the fact that we cant really go anywhere at the moment.

During this period, I’ve really been able to focus on my mindset towards finances which I personally think is one of the most important things to look at when you are trying to become more financially literate.

I’ve been listening to podcasts, live streams, reading info online, etc to help me improve my financial fitness, which has been really useful! Most of the resources I have used have been free (I like freebies in case you couldn’t tell). For example, Wealthsimple send me monthly emails about live seminars they are hosting about pensions, investing. etc, which you may also find useful and can easily sign up for free. Check them out if interested and thank me later!
